Chapter 16: The Kal'den Tribe

Keoth and Vercingettorix decided to pay a visit to the Kal’den tribe in hopes of coming to some sort of cease fire against the dwarves. After defeating and capturing the Kal’den champion, Ta’lik, they used her as leverage against the goblin leader, Jib. Jib agreed to allow them to visit their campsite, but warned that Ta’lik best be left unharmed otherwise there would be concequences. With that, he and the rest of his clansmen summoned their rocs to carry the clansmen back to camp, while Ug’ta, the bugbear the party had captured during the second raid, would lead them back to the Kal’den campsite. It was at that point that Korinn decided she best stay with Vercingettorix and Keoth, as they may need backup, the rest of the party would continue to Dusseldorf as planned.

Vercingettorix thought it best to wake Ta’lik and have her lead them versus Ug’ta, as diplomacy with her may prove to be valuable. Korinn’s healing efforts awoke Ta’lik, and after some persuasion from Vercingettorix, she was unbound and led the way to the Kal’den camp, sending Ug’ta home via her roc. The party conversed on the way to the Kal’den,Keoth and Vercingettorix were wary of a potential ambush, planning what to do once they reached the camp should they be attacked. Korinn and Ta’lik made small- talk, speaking of their homes and mounts.

It was mid- evening when the four reached the tribal campgrounds. The heroes’ presence was unexpected as many clansmembers gawked at the group of travelers. It was then they were approached by the clan’s leader, Zaya. After the party explained their reasons for entering the camp, Zaya revealed evidence of a dwarven hand in the missing goblins. After much discussion, Zaya agreed to give the party 28 moons to parley with the northern frost- goblin tribe to ask for a cease- fire, otherwise the attacks would continue. The party made plans to return to Dusseldorf and parley with the rest of the group.

While there, the three took in the local culture, speaking with the natives and seeing what they could learn. To learn of the whereabouts of the northern frost goblins, the three heroes turned to Ta’lik for answers who in turn steered them to Jib, the goblin chieftan. Jib explained to the party that the northern frost goblin tribe was located at the base of the mountains in the labrinthene ice caves. He warned, however, that do to the dire circumstances, the frost goblins had allied themselves with the neighboring frost trolls, who, in exchange for their aide, sought to enslave the frost goblins. The three heroes feared the worst to come, as dealing with trolls is never diplomatic.

After a hear-to-heart talk with Zaya did Vercingettorix decide to remain with the Kal-den clan for a time to learn more about their culture and heritage, instructing them to come back for him when they were to head to the northern goblin tribes. Keoth joined Korinn on the back of her mount, Sora, and the two flew back to Dusseldorf to regroup with the rest of the party to plan their next move.

Chapter 15: The Caravan Part 3

It was late afternoon and the party was recovering from their second run in with the Kal’den raiders. Two men’s lives were lost, but a prisoner was gained. The party needed answers and this might be their best bet. Keoth and Vercingettorix decided to interrogate the captured bugbear, Vercingettorix being able to speak goblinoid. However, when diplomatic tactics failed, they were left with no choice but to torture the captive, breaking two of his fingers for the information they desired.

Keoth and Vercingettorix asked about any more upcoming ambushes. The bugbear exclaimed that another ambush was inevitable when he failed to return with his comrade, however, where and when he had no idea. The party was in the dark, but decided to keep their captive and his mount, hoping they could prove useful in the future. The party continued on toward their destination cautiously.

It was early evening when the party reached the bridge leading to Dusseldorf. However, no sooner did the party approach the bridge did they get ambushed by Ta’lik, the goliath champion of the Kal’den clan and her forces. Though cunning, the party proved too much for her, so she had to resort to her backup plan to destroy the bridge. That plan too backfired, as Aliemma appeared to aid the party, stopping the trap dead in it’s tracks. In desperation, Ta’lik resorted to her barbarian rage, grappling Vergingettorix and hoping to drown him. However, Vercingettorix escaped, turning the tide of battle in his favor, but before he could finish his fight, Diane intervined, keeping Vercingettorix from killing Ta’lik. Upon seeing Diane, the attacking forces surrendered, knowing her to be a deva. Vercingettorix was furious with Diane’s intervention, causing her to flee in tears. The party now had two captives, one unconcious and one maimed.

Vercingettorix and Keoth agree that in order for the caravan to truly be safe, they should speak with the Kal’den cheiftan. With Ta’lik in tow, the party convinced the goblin leader, Jib, grant them an audience with the Kal’den chietan. Jib warned, however, that Ta’lik not be harmed or war between the Kal’dens and the dwarven lands would be sure to break out. That said, Keoth and Vercingettorix send the caravan and the rest of the party off to complete their mission to Dusseldorf, while the two prepare to meet the Zaya, the Kal’den chieftan.

Chapter 14: The Caravan (Part Two)

It was high noon and the party was continuing onwar toward Dusseldorf. The caravan was safe, but they still had a long road ahead of them.

For precaution, Keoth decided to opt for a new formation. The canyon-sides seemed like he perfect place for and ambush, so he had the guards line up to guard from the wall. The party members all headed to the front of the line, learning from their past battle ready for any incoming danger… and danger came sooner than they would have thought as the boars became suddenly uneasy and started slowing down.

In the distance a lone figure stood alone blocking their path. This creature was cackling to himself in the distance. A closer inspection identified the figure as a lone, older goblin, mumbling and cackling to himself in a seemingly diabolical and peverse way. The party shouted out to the goblin, hoping to obtain information on the nature of these goblin attacks. The sinister goblin replied to their question with a wide sinister grin, a grin of perversion and delight. Suddenly, wolves began to appear, almost out of nowhere from the west, sliking into a circular formation to not only surround the caravan, but to protect their master as well. The party would not be intimidated by such a tactic, and Vercingettorix charged forward, leaping into the fray of wolves. However, the tactic did not prove to be the smartest, as he was quickly brough to the ground by three wolves, surrounding, knocking him prone, and dragging him away in an attempt to separate him from the rest of the party. The party saw this and lept into the fray, cutting down wolves in their path and leaving the caravan to fend for themselves. The party engaged the gobnlin and his wolf minions, while the caravan managed to hold it’s own against any attackers that got too close for comfort. The party had the goblin and his wolves seemingly on the ropes, but just as the part felt they were to win, the goblin cackled and let out a shrill howl. From atop the mesa, two dire wolves appeared, mounted by two fearsome bugbear riders. The pair decended upon the caravan and began their attack. The party had been tricked into the ambush, baiting them to allow for an attack directly on the caravan. However, while the goblin cackled in triumph, it was not to last long, as Vercingettorix cut down the goblin where he stood. Seeing this, the remaining wolves fled, but the bugbears remained.

The bugbears were making work of the dwarven caravan guards, and after cutting through three of them, managed to spook the first wagon into stampeding forward. With some quick thinkin and timing, Diana and the guard captain managed to stop the stampeding wagon whilst the rest of the party closed in on the remaining two attackers. after a few choice blows, the raiders quickly realized that the were outnumbered and outmatched. Both turned to flee, but while one got away, a lucky guard managed to trip up the escaping bugbear and the party apprehended him and his wolf mount before he could commit suicide. With a prisoner in tow, the party continued onward for Dusseldorf in hopes in learning more about the nature of these goblin attacks.

Chapter 13: The Caravan

Dawn came,and the party awoke early to their assigned task of guiding the caravan to Dusseldorf. As they reached the gate, the party met with the leader of the dweorg escort, Captain Bartlebuss Greyhelm. When the party inquired on the wherabouts of Sir Ironfell, the captain explained that Ironfell had returned to Wendelheim to make his report to the queen, and was entrusting Keoth with the task of guiding the caravan. With task in mind, Keoth and the party headed towards Dusseldorf.

The journey started out simple enough; it was early morning and the party had been traveling for hours, no threats in site. Keoth decided on a plan: to have half the troops, as well as the party members, hide in the caravans to draw out their attackers in hopes of getting the drop on the enemy. The formation was simple: Keoth and the Captain led the charge while one guard walked alongside each caravan, the other hiding within. Emily, Galadriel, and Diana hid one in each wagon alongside a guard, Sorrah and Pastor David hid within the last wagon, Korrinn and Vercingettorix stayed at the rear to avoid being surrounded. The formaion was set, the plan was sound, now all they had to doo was be on their guard and all would be fine…. or so they thought.

Then, Diane heard something. From atop the mesa, she sensed footsteps, lots of them, tiny and moving fast. She called out a warning and soon the mesa was lined with goblins. One steped forward from behind the others. He was dressed in ritual garb, obviously a spelllcaster of some sort. He raied his hand and yelled, and within an instant, the goblins came running down the canyonside, fearless, bloodthirsty, and ready for battle. Keoth gave the word and the party lept from the wagons to engage their attackers.

The goblins struck hard and fast; some weilding mere daggers, some weilding slings, while still others carried deadly battleaxes, swinging them wildly with aplomb and ferocity. Leading them all was the spellcaster goblin, a hexer, launching bolts of energy and clouds of mist. It was then the party began to realize… these goblins were tough, not your average run-of the mill goblins. Goblins were weak, sniveling creatures; the goblins before them fought with tenacity, cunning and ferocity. It was then when a battleaxe goblin did a traditional Goliath defensive roll that he realized: these goblins were goliath trained. Using this knowledge, he fought on. After a feirce battle, the party managed to drive them back. Some goblins ran off climbing up the canyonside, while their leader and a few other goblins were picked up by giant birds known as rocs, a typical retreat tactic used by a goliath tribe known as the Kal’den clan. Apparently these goblins were working in tandem with the Kal’dens, but why? As Keoth pondered these questions, he dusted his clothes, strengthened his resolve and continued on with his mission. The goblin raiders had been beaten back and they had to get these supplies through. The caravan is safe…or is it?

Chapter 12: The Return

The heroes returned to the ship to find Syke’s betrayal of both them and the crew, instigating a mutiny against his foster father, Captain Grizzbeard. The party was being ushered into the dungeon, all except for Emily, Galadriel, and Diana, as Sykes wished to have his way with the lovely young women (he had not done so in such a long time). With some quick thinking, Galadriel managed to seduce Sykes drawing him near enough to imobilize him with one of her new items, the Green Thumbs, an item which allowed her to create massive vines from her fingertips. The rest of the party used the moment of confusion to jump their captors, freeing themselves as well as their pirate ally, Minsc. As the heroes took down the unruly pirates, Sykes decided a desperate maneuver, threatening his father’s life in exchange for escape. It didn’t work however, and it wasn’t long before the young pirate scholar met a gruesome fate at the hands of Vercingettorix. With the deed done and a heavy heart, the crew disposed of the body and continued on to their destination.

The mood was sollen as Diana expresed her deep distaste for the act committed in front of her eyes, running away in sorrow unable to process the atrocity. It was then that the axe spoke to Vercingettorix in a familiar and articulate voice, the voice of Sykes. The axe explained to Vercingettorix that they were now connected and for everyone Vercingettorix kills, it feeds off their souls and gets stronger. Threatening to consume Vercingettorix, in the eye of the storm, he calls out to the spirits for salvation. Thought all hope to be lost, the skies clear and Vercingettorix sees what he believes to be a sign of hope. He vowed to destroy the axe and the evil it posessed.

After a week or so of safe travel, the party finally reached New Olympia, home of Keoth. They docked on the shores of Gildenstern, a fishing village in the Dweorg settlement of Rime Valley. Keoth hoped to make a shorter trip to Keoth’s home town of Dusseldorf, located north of Gildenstern and located in the lower- center of the more protected areas of rime valley. It was then Keoth noticed strange looks he was getting from the townsfolk, looks of uneasiness. Keoth sought out the nearest guard to ask of the goings on, only to find out rumors of Goblin raids on the New Olympian supply routes. Word of Keoth’s arrival sparked the interest of the current substitute head of Rime Valley, Bram Ironfell. He requested the service of Keoth and his friends in order to guide a supply caravan to Dusseldorf in order to provide supplies to neighboring towns in Rime Valley. As the rumors told, Rime Valley supply lines had been recently cut by the neigboring goblin tribes and Bram needed staunch and trustworthy allies to ensure the caravan’s save passage. Keoth humbly agreed and the party prepared for their journey.

Chapter 11: The Azure Dragon

After a careful deliberation, the party decided that it was best to slay the blue dragon, in fear it may execute another plot to wipe out the Paradwyns. However, Korinn wished to first speak to the dragon. With that request, the party devised a plan to ambush Kurtulmak in her own home, the question, however, was how to lure him out. Galadriel recalled fom her studies, blue dragon personality traits: aggression, vanity, extreme territoryality, and a love for all things blue, especially sapphires. The group decided to visit the captain, in hopes that he may have some sapphires, or some sort of blue gem to lure the dragon out of hiding. However, upon leaving the Paradwyn encampment, they saw a large creature soar over the skies. It was the blue dragon flying over the horizon, heading straight for the pirate ship! Was it about to attack? Was it hunting?! Whatever the reason, it had left the cave, flying in the pirate ship’s direction, the party had little time.

After acquiring a sapphire hairpin from the captain and his daughter, the party headed for the dragon’s den. Korinn waited out front in hopes of luring Kurtulmak into a false sense of security, while the rest of the party entered the cave to prepare for the ambush, cleaning up Kurtulmak’s minions as they went. When Kurtulmak returned, the dragon was greeted by Korinn. Suspicious, yet intrigued, the draon conversed with Korinn, giving her the information she sought, but almost loosing her life to do so. With some quick thinking, she provoked the dragon into following her, and the party made their move. Kurtulmak was down, but not out, and when she ot her chance, she roared a great roar, paralyzing the party and escaped to the depths of her labrynthine cave. She was luring them into a trap.

Deeper ino the cave, the party ran into some more of Kurtulmak’s minions, including ettercaps: a spider- like race found in the feywild. The arrived at the end of the tunnel to find the dragon’s treasure hoard…. but no dragon. Where could she have gone. For some, this was a time of caution, knowing the dragon could ambush them at any moment. For others, it was a time of wealth; Kurtulmak was sure to come back eventually, but in the meantime, no sense in walking away unprepared and empty- handed. The party found wonderous things, from weapons to trinkets. Amongst these things, Korinn found several dray artifacts, some with insignias of her homeland. Keoth happened to find some curious objects himself, including what appeared to be a holy symbol engraved with the symbol of moradin, as well as several others he’d never seen before. Vercingettorix found a khopesh engraved with the insignia of Semunaya. Many fey artifacts were there as well. Then amongst some obscure artifacts, the group located the rune, and not too soon either, for as they attempted to exit the cave, Kurtulmak droped from the ceiling, mouth open and teeth bared.

Injured from the ambush, the party quickly gained the upper hand. As Vecingettorix readied himself to finish the dragon, Kurtulmak bowed her head in surrender, asking for the life of her and her soon- to- be siblings in exchange for her departure. After a plea from Galadriel, the party let the battered dragon escape, leaving it’s treasure horde behind. However, this caused tension between the group, as Vercingettorix was less than pleased at the party’s naivete and vacated the cave in anger.

Victorious, the party headed back to the pirate ship, some riches in tow. They were greeted by Sykes only to be backstabbed by him and two other crewmates, Stooge and Zug. The three had orchistrated a mutiny in order to take control of the ship and it’s riches. His first order as captain was to apprehend the party, ordering Keoth, Vercingettorix, Korinn and Minsc to be sent to the brigg, while he would have his way with Emily, Galadriel, and Diana. With some quick thinking, and the help of an artifact she had recently acquired, Galadriel managed to cause a commotion, distracting the pirates long enough to help the party escape. However, the party finds themselves in a pickle, slowly being overwhelmed by Sykes and the rogue pirates. Will they manage to stop Sykes and reclaim the ship?

Chapter 10: The Dragonborn Paladin

The party had emerged from Semunaya’s cave, unscathed in body, but battered in heart. After speaking with the spirit of the cave, Lillend, the party attempted to gather their wits after what they had seen. Vercingettorix was still troubled, having donned the cursed armor and causing Lillnd to faint. After running into the forest and throwing the cursed axe into it’s depths, Keoth pursued in an attempt to sooth his forlorn companion, while Galadriel attempted to calm the startled villagers, having their world literally shaken by the experience. After all the commotion settled down, the party consulted Bazha about removing the cursed armor from Vercingettorix. The ritual was taxing on Vercingettorix, but he endured the great pain of ripping the darkness from him, and was given an artifact known as “Wings of Semunaya” to stave off any more influence fom the dark artifacts. With the ritual declared a sucess, Bazha proclaimed a feast to be held in the party’s honor, and be acknowledged as honorary members of the Paradwyn tribe. The party participated in the preparations, and Pastor David in particular was getting into the swing of things. Vercingettorix, however, went to see Lillend again. He wished to leave the cursed artifacts with her, afraid what might become of him if they stayed in his presence. She was hesitant, explaining the peril it may put her people in. She instructed him to leave the cursed weapon and armor int the cave for the night, she would think on it and give him an answer he next day.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the island, a warwing drake and rider landed on the island. Alerted by their drake sentries about the sudden intrusion, the tribesmen dropped what they were doing and headed to the intruders whereabouts. Galadriel followed the tribesmen, anxious to see what all the fuss was about. They surrounded the intruder who introduced herself as Korinn, a dray paladin of Bahamut. She explained that she merely wished to rest on the island, as her warwing drake mount, Sora, was weary from travel. The Paradwyns, wary of dray, took Korinn into captivity. Upon arrival to the village, they interrogated Korinn. Galadriel urged the Paradwyns to trust her, and with a vouch from Keoth, the Paradwyns hesitantly trusted their newfound friends’ judgement and allowed Korinn to remain in the village.

That evening, merimentt was abound. Food, drink, entertainment, the evening was alive with excitement and the group soon passed out in a drunken stupor. However, their jovality was short lived as Vercingettorix began to have visions in his sleep; dark and ominous visions hat awoke Vercingettorix with terror. Vercingettorix headed to the cave in a hurry, awakening the other party members along with him. When they reached the cave, they found the axe imbedded in the sacred ring of Semunaya; the armor folded neatly below it. Vercingettorix summoned Lilend, but when he asked what had happened, she was as unaware as they. Puzzled, the party decided to take the axe with them, afraid that it may cause the villagers harm. As Vercingettorix picked it up, the axe spoke to him, demanding blood to regain it’s power. Vercingettorix resisted the dark axe’s temptations and with that, the party returned to bed. Plans of what to do about the dragon would be dealt with the next day.

The next day, Diana awoke to the sound of stampeding drakes headed off to the forest. She alertd the other party members, and not all too soon, as a large tyranasaurus rex lept into the center of the encampment. The party readied themselves for battle, but Bazha urged the party to not harm the beast, for that was Saurun, the Paradwyn tribe’s protector from the dragon Kurtulmak. The beast, enraged was being tailed by a pack of what the paradwyn’s called “the Pun-pun” more commonly known as “Kobolds”. The kobolds prodded on the beast, urging it to do more destruction, they had to be stopped.

The party lept into action, Vercingettorix leading the charge, while Korinn and Sora disracted the beast from the air. Meanwhile, Emily and Keoth tag teamed the the Kobolds, picking them off one by one. The ringleader of the Kobolds, what appeared to be a some sort of priest or shaman, launched ligning attack after lightning attack at the party, but to no avail. in the end, the kobolds were crushed under the weight of the mighty beast, and Vercingettorix managed to soothe the savage beast, sending it back into it’s forested homeland. Triumphant, the party knew what had to be done. They had to kill the blue dragon known as Kurtulmak, once and for all.

Chapter 9: The Island and the Stowaway Princess

It was dawn when the elusive “Drifting Island” was spotted. The ship anchored itself roughly 20 feet away allowing the the members to take the rowboats to shore. Before they left, however, Captain Grzzbeard offered up the services of his finest crewmembers to aide the party in their search: Stooge the kenku lookout, Zug the hobgoblin quartermaster, Grizelda the captain’s half-orc foster daughter, Minsc the human navigator (and his miniature space hampster Boo), Edmund Sykes the half elven first mate and the captain’s foster son, the captain himself, though if he went, Sykes would have to stay to manage the ship. The party decided to take Zug, Minsc, and Sykes (to keep an eye on him and his attempts to charm Emily).

The seven sent out for shore. When they landed on the beach, they noticed the land was curved, and the party trudged upward over the beachy slope into the dense underbrush. The forest was thick and dense, covered with vines and palm trees. Emily decided she wanted to have fruit for breakfast, and so she decided to climb a palm tree in hopes of finding a coconut or two. Her efforts were met with hostility, however, as she was grabbed by a vine and drug out of the tree. Soon, living vines were sprouting form all over, grabbing the party from every which way. They managed to beat back the vines, but realized the dangers of this forest were everywhere. Between the carnivorous foliage and a dragon, the party had their work cut out for them. What other dangers awaited them on their exploration?

The party continued to cut through the branble, avoiding any more large bushes that looked like they could hide carnverous vines. As they continued through the dense forest, they were startled by Galadriel who had been following their path through the forest. She introduced herself as the former princess of Kybithia, and after some explanation of her reasons for being there and some squabbling between her and Emily, Keoth finally urged the party to head into the dense forest to continue with their mission. They didn’t get far, however before they encountered a small pack of large lizards. As they approached, the drakes began to growl, and the next thing the party knew, a dart whizzed by and shot Diana in the neck, knocking her out. Vrcingettorix took initiative and began to attack the drakes. It wasn’t long, however, before larger drakes joined the fray; the party had to figure out who was attacking them.

After managing to drive back the drakes, the party was surrounded by what appeared to be humans and larger lizard people dressed in tribal garb. They spoke to them in a foreign tongue which Pastor David identified as draconic. The party was ordered to drop their weapons, and upon doing so, were led back to a secret camp located within the center of the island. There, they were led to kneel before what appeared to be an older lizardman dressed in regal garb. Another man of human decent approached the party introducing himself as Ookami, and in turn introduced the older lizardman as Bazha, the spiritual leader of the Paradwyn tribe. The man asked for the party’s reasons for being on the island, and after the party explained themselves, Bazha ordered for the “intruders” to take the customary test of passage, to prove their worth to their goddess Semunaya. The party would choose four of their team members to enter the cave. Should they come back alive, they would be permitted to stay on the island as friends and allies, however, should they fail, the remaining party members would be killed. After much debate, the party decided that Keoth, Vercingettorix, Emily, and Galadriel would enter the cave(with severe protest from Pastor David). Keoth instructed the rest of them to protect Diana at all costs. The four were unbound, given back their weapons, and with a deep breath, entered the cave, unknowing what horrors awaited them.
